Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

By the time ovarian cancer is detected, it is usually a death sentence. This is not necessarily the case but more than likely the survival rate is very low. Part of the reason detection is that they are so few symptoms and they mimic other diseases. Sometimes doctors misdiagnose the disease until it’s too late. An understanding of the symptoms might help in making an early diagnosis.

Women often have to fight for a doctor’s help when their symptoms are non specific and indicative of other problems. The varied of seemingly unrelated problems often gives the physician the idea that the woman has emotional problems. All too often the diagnosis is that it’s all in her head. The doctor tells her when her emotional problems are over, she will be fine. In many cases diagnosis comes years after the woman complains of symptoms. By then it’s often too late. Patients, most often women, are intimidated by their doctors so they take whatever the doctor says so they take the pill and try to go on with their lives.

Unfortunately, the symptoms just get wore. The first symptom is that you feel a little tired and not just yourself. That is not a symptom the doctor will take seriously. Trust yourself. Keep pushing. Next there could be weight loss but not around the stomach area. That too is often a symptom of menopause so doctors tell you it’s your age. Your stomach seems bloated which could be gas.

Then there is pain. This usually occurs when ovarian cancer is pretty far along. Most women describe the pain as being like being like a stab in their abdomen. The pain is horrible and will often double you over. When this symptom occurs, most doctors get into overdrive. They realize at least something is going on. After diagnosis occurs, a complete hysterectomy is performed. In younger women who want to have children, this is especially horrendous.

After surgery there is chemotherapy which has differing results depending on the stage of the cancer. With the later stages, doctors give treatments that are many to help keep the patient comfortable since little or nothing works at the last stages.

Ovarian cancer is very difficult to diagnosis. You have to become your own advocate. If you are wrong and you just have a nervous stomach, what have you lost? Who cares if your doctor thinks you are a flake. If you are correct, you might just be saving your life. Dying with ovarian cancer is a slow and very painful process. Early detection is crucial for survival. If you have any of these symptoms, keep going until you find a doctor who is willing to go the extra mile to treat you. It’s your life; be strong. Follow your instincts.
